Kafle te wykonane z glinki żelazistej o czer­ wonym wypale, pokryte są brudno - białą pole­ wą mocno już przez ząb czasu nadwyrężoną. Po­ wierzchnia kafli zdobiona jest malaturami robio­ nymi kolorowymi polewami na gładkiej po­ wierzchni, bądź ozdobami plastycznymi tłoczonymi z formy i polichromowanymi. Malatury jak i polichromia ozdób plastycz­ nych wykonane są głównie kolorem brązowo-fioletowym (uzyskiwanym zapewne przy użyciu mie­ lonego brausztynu) i zimno zielonym (sole miedzi), czasem pojawia się ponadto kolor jasno żółty. Wśród motywów zdobiących powierzchnię ka­ fli, w kilku zaledwie wypadkach występują moty­ wy wyłącznie roślinne, przedstawiające owoc granatu, lub stylizowany w kwadracie motyw kwiatu. Czasem spotykamy na kaflach figury zwierząt. Prócz wykonanego plastycznie czarnego orła w koronie na głowie, trzymającego w szpo­ nach miecz i jabłko, z datą 1834, mamy kafle z niedźwiedziem i z gniazdem z pisklętami. Oby­ dwa z wymienionych ostatnio kafli posiadają wzór malowany kolorowymi polewami na gładkiej po­ wierzchni. Na kaflu z ptakami na okładce widzimy schematycznie zaznaczone gniazdo, z którego wy­ chylają się głowy piskląt. Nad gniazdem unoszą się dwa ptaki. Na drugiej kafli przedstawiony jest niedźwiedź (ryc. 7) stojący na tylnich łapach trzy­ mający w przednich długi drąg. Zwierzę uwiązane jest za szyję na łańcuchu, który ciągnie się łukiem RE1NFUSS w kierunku lewego brzegu. Kafla ta stanowi nie­ wątpliwie jedną całość z drugą do dziś nie docho­ waną, na której przedstawiony był zapewne kug­ larz lub wędrowny cygan. Najliczniejszą grupę stanowią kafle z kompo­ zycjami figuralnymi. Na kilku z nich widzimy po­ stacie żołnierzy w uniformach żywo przypominają­ cych epokę napoleońską. Jest tam więc dwóch maszerujących piechurów w wysokich czakach z kitami na przodzie (ryc. 11), jeździec na koniu, trzymający w ręku wydobytą szablę (ryc. 6), itp Dwukrotnie powtarza się scena z karczmy. W jed­ nej (ryc. 5) żołnierz w napoleońskim kapeluszu siedzi przy stole obok grającego na skrzypcach muzykanta, w drugiej te same postacie wraz z ko­ bietą trzymającą w ręku flaszkę. Bardzo ciekawym zabytkiem z tej serii jest kafla niepolewana przedstawiająca dwóch żołnie­ rzy w ubiorach z czasów napoleońskich stojących po dwóch stronach serca z drobnymi ozdobami kwiatowymi. Fakt, że w okolicy Brzegu znalazł się okaz kafli niewykończonej pod względem technicznym mógłby nasuwać przypuszczenie, że opisana tu seria kafli była wyrabiana na Śląsku. Wśród kafli odobionych ludzkimi postaciami szczególnie interesująca jest grupa z rysunkami o charakterze obyczajowym. Znajdziemy tam ko­ bietę i mężczyznę w strojach z końca X V I I I wie­ ku, przechadzających się w parku (ryc 12), kobietę w krynolinowatej sukni z wiadrami uwiązanymi na nosidle (ryc. 1). Jedna z kafli przedstawia trzy męskie postacie z kapeluszami zdjętymi w ukło­ nie (ryc. 2). Napis umieszczony powyżej brzmi 261 ��sto. Jest tam np. .edna kafla nie posiadająca na swej powierzchni nic poza napisem ujętym w fali­ stą ramkę i daty. Napis niestety nie dający się w całości odcyfrować (ryc. 4), zawiera sentencję przeciwstawia­ jącą los dzieci posiadających rodziców, doli sierot: 263 �Napisy wyłącznie w języku polskim, nie poz­ walają wątpić co do narodowości wykonawcy. W zbiorze brzeskim znajduje się też jedna kafla o tematyce bibli.nej. Przedstawia ona postać brodatego mężczyzny siedzącego u stóp krzyża, z boku w prawym górnym rogu tablica z dekalo­ giem, a obok niej napis „moyses" (ryc. 10). Z dwóch wymienionych na wstępie, a różnią­ cych się techniką wykonania grup kafli, bardziej interesująco przedstawia się seria zdobiona tech­ niką malarską na gładkiej powierzchni. Silnie za­ znaczone kontury, dosyć swobodnie traktowane proporcje, typizacja w traktowaniu postaci, naka­ zują wyroby te uważać za okazy czysto ludowej twórczości artystycznej. Kafle z plastycznie wykonanymi ozdobami na powierzchni nie mają już tego ludowego charak­ teru. Dosyć naturalistyczne, powielane przy uży­ ciu gipsowej formy, stanowią raczej przykład pro­ dukcji rzemieślniczej. Kafle z Brzegu jak świadczą daty zachowane 264 Rycina <> na paru okazach (1834) pochodzą z I połowy ub. w. W tym samym czasie podobne wyrabiane były na terenie Polski i w innych stronach, jnp. na Pomo­ rzu, Mazurach Pruskich, w Krakowie, w Kłoda­ wie a poza tym w krajach sąsiednich w Niemczech, Czechach, na Węgrzech, w Siedmiogrodzie i na Małorusi (na Pokuciu). Tematyka ozdób była wszędzie mniej więcej jednakowa, (ornament ro­ ślinny, sceny obyczajowe, wojsko, orły herbowe). Opisana wyżej seria kafli z Brzegu zdradza zdu­ miewające podobieństwo do kafli znanych z tere­ nów mazurskich. Zestawiając kafle brzeskie z kaflami mazurskiemi publikowanymi przez J . Grabowskiego w Pol. Szt. Lud. ) spostrzegamy duże podobień­ stwo zarówno w kompozycji ogólnej, jak i w te­ matyce czy sposobie wykonania. 1 Kafle brzeskie z punktu widzenia kompozycji ornamentu podzielić można na 3 grupy. Do pierw­ szej zaliczymy, kafle, w których motyw centralny ujęty jest w ozdobną na sposób barokowy powy- �ginaną ramką. W rogach widoczne są liściaste ozdoby (ryc. na okładce, ryc. 1, 7, 12). Drugą grupę stanowią te w których kompozycja centralna jest bez ramki, tylko w rogach występują znane ozdoby liściaste (ryc. 5, 6, 10, 11). W trzeciej grupie za­ miast ozdób liściastych w narożnikach biegnie strzępiasty szlak wzdłuż górnej i dolnej krawędzi kafli. Wszystkie trzy wymienione sposoby rozwią­ zań ornamentalnych znane są również z kafli ma­ zurskich publikowanych przez J . Grabowskiego'^. Zespół motywów zdobiących środkową część kafli brzeskich jest uboższy niż w kaflach mazur­ skich, nie mniej wiele kafli znanych nam z Brze­ gu posiada analogie w materiale mazurskim. Wi­ doczne, to jest w każdej z wyróżnionych poprzed-AK> grup motywów. Na kaflach mazurskich rów­ nież występują ptaki, niedźwiedź na sznurze i sce­ ny rodzajowe z napisami. Sukertowa w swym artykule o kaflach z muzeum w Działdowie cytuje nawet (obok innych) napis znany nam z Brzegu („Pomaczaj mie Kuba") ). Odpowiednik do brzes­ kich kafli przedstawiających włościan proszących wójta o sprawiedliwe osądzenie, stanowi na Mazu­ rach publikowany przez Grabowskiego zespół 2 kafli, z których jedna z napisem „moi Panie woicie Jus sie adnami zmiłujcie", przedstawia ko­ bietę i dwóch mężczyzn z kapeluszami w ręku, druga zaś wyniosłą postać wó ta i jakiegoś dru­ giego mężczyznę. U góry tej drugiej kafli biegnie napis: „Słuchaj rozkazu", (ryc. 8). Występują też na Mazurach Pruskich kafle z rozmaitymi napisami, lub plastycznymi wyobrażeniami żołnierzy. Suker3 265 �towa w cytowanym powyżej artykule publikuje fotografie kafli, na której przedstawione są posta­ cie dwóch wojaków stojących po dwóch stronach serca z napisem „Turek i Grek 1840". Ta sama kompozycja, a bodajże nawet odcisk z tej samej formy, publikowana jest w pracy Grabowskiego, ale z innym napisem. Obydwie wspomniane tu kafle znajdują odpowiednik w Brzegu w postaci wzmiankowanej na wstępie kafli niepolewanej. Trafia się też wśród kafli mazurskich scena przedstawiająca siedzącego przy stoliku żołnie­ rza i grajka (ryc. 3) czy maszerujących piechu­ rów. Również sposób wykonania ozdób na kaflach brzeskich a zwłaszcza sposób traktowania postaci ludzkich nie odbiega od tego co widujemy na kaf­ lach mazurskich. Wystarczy porównać ryc. 2 i 8 by stwierdzić bardzo daleko idące podobieństwa, i 266 Rycina 9 które sięgają nawet tak drugorzędnych szczegó­ łów ubioru j.np. sposób konturowania spodni. Na podstawie analogii zachodzących między serią kafli z Brzegu a kaflami mazurskimi, uwzględ­ niając, że pochodzenie tych ostatnich nie ulega żadnym wątpliwościom, „śląskość" kafli brzeskich musi być zakwestionowana. Z punktu widzenia proweniencji, kafle z Brzegu są niewątpliwie ka­ flami mazurskimi, należałoby jedynie ustalić kie­ dy i jakimi drogami trafiły one do Brzegu. Dla przyszłego badacza kafli mazurskich zbiór znajdujący się w Muzeum Miejskim w Brze­ gu stanowi pozycję ważną, której w żadnym wy­ padku nie wolno byłoby pominąć. A przecież Adolf Dygasiński pisząc Asa w końcu ubiegłego wieku był jeszcze odkrywcą. Chciał opisywać klasy najniższe. Czy można było znaleźć na drabinie społecznej kogoś niższego niż psa? On się po prostu znajdował poniżej tej drabiny. Do tego jest świadkiem i nieraz krzywdzonym uczestnikiem wydarzeń, które ludzie starają się ukryć przed opinią publiczną. Pies naturalistyczny to zupełnie inne zwierzę niż pies alegoryczny, który służył literaturze już dawno. 2 VIII 1993 Na najniższym stopniu, koło psa, przez całe wieki znajduje się przykucnięte dziecko. Właściwie ani żadnej osobnej duszy, ani tym bardziej ważności nie miało. Kochanowski jednak wielkim krokiem wyprzedziwszy literaturę, nadał Urszulce ważność przynależną personom. Uczcił ją Trenami, przy okazji uczynił poetką, bo jednak bez żadnych dorosłych przymiotów do opiewania nie mógł jej do ważności wprowadzić. 3 VIII 1993 Do ważności, czyli do literatury, do poezji. Powiedzmy od dwunastu, trzynastu lat do jakichś szesnastu to już młodzież chyba. Trudno się dowiedzieć. W każdym razie zostały zapełnione w Wilnie i przyjechały pociągiem „repat­ riacyjnym" w roku 1945. Matka pani profesor Janion, bo to kajety prof. Janion, właśnie tej wiosny (1993) na Wielkanoc w Łodzi oddala jej, żeby wzięła te zeszyty do siebie. 15 VIII 1993 Pierwszy kajet to notes w kratkę z dziurkowanymi kartkami do zrywania (wysokość 21,5 cm, szerokość 13 cm), z wykończonym metalem otworem do zawieszania. Prof. Janion natychmiast zaanektowała legitymację biblioteczną swojej mamusi i jej przyjaciółki. Ktoś powie, że to bez sensu liczyć na strony. Tyle tylko że tu się liczy przede wszystkim czas. Mogą być genialni dwunastoletni matematy­ cy, ale nie ma dwunastoletnich genialnych humanistów. Żeby wykształcić humanistę, trzeba dłuższego czasu. 27 VIII 1993 Do humanistyki zupełnie jak do matematyki konieczna jest intuicja. Ale intuicja ma dojść do głosu dopiero w trzecim tysiącleciu. Ciekawe, co robić do tego czasu. Wydaje się, że mnóstwo ludzi się nad tym zastanawia. Na razie w Polsce postmodernizm ledwo raczkujący zaraz się na szczęście skończy. Praca została napisana w ramach prac Zakładu Etnografii w Łodzi, przygotowującego pod kierunkiem prof. K . Zawistowicz-Adamskiej tom Prac i Materiałów Etnograficznych, poświęcony problematyce zajęć pozarolniczych. Prace referowano i dyskutowano na zebraniach nauko­ wych Zakładów Etnografii w Łodzi i Warszawie. Podstawowe źródła pracy stanowią materiały terenowe Zakładu Etno­ graficznego U.Ł., zebrane w 1951 r. podczas badań terenowych, w których uczestniczyłam z ramienia tegoż Zakładu. Oprócz materiałów terenowych jako dalsze źródła pracy wyzyskano również wypisy z dokumentów historycznych, znajdujące się obecnie w prywatnym posiadaniu miesz­ kańców Kamieńczyka i Brańszczyka, dane statystyczne z Gminnej Rady Narodowej oraz literaturę historyczną. Badania terenowe miały charakter badań stacjonarnych. Uczestni­ czyło w nich 10 osób w ciągu 30 dni pracy. B y l i to studenci i asystenci Zakładu Etnografii U.Ł. oraz socjologowie studiujący pobocznie etno­ grafię. Zasadnicze badania przeprowadzono w Kamieńczyku, do wsi okolicznych robiono jedynie wypady celem uzyskania materiału porów­ nawczego. Podstawą badań były kwestionariusze dotyczące ogólnej charakte­ rystyki osady, gospodarki rolnej oraz flisu z uwzględnieniem jego wpły­ wu na życie gospodarcze i społeczne osady. Badaniami objęto około 100 osób, w t y m około 60 byłych flisaków, kilkunastu szewców, kilku rol­ ników, nauczycieli, księży, działaczy społecznych, pracowników GRN, spółdzielczych itp. W wyniku badań uzyskano 125 wywiadów, w t y m 110 wywiadów dotyczących samego Kamieńczyka oraz 15 wywiadów, ze wsi okolicznych. Materiał terenowy był opracowywany na miejscu, bezpośrednio po przeprowadzeniu rozmowy z informatorami. Osada Kamieńczyk nad Bugiem, pow. Wyszków, znana do wieku X V I I I pod nazwą Kamieńca Mazowieckiego, w wieku X I X i pierwszej połowie X X w. była osadą, w której podstawowym zajęciem zdecydo- �KAMIEŃCZYK, OSADA FLISACKA 365 wanej większości mężczyzn stał się spław drzewa wodą, czyli tzw. flis. Największe nasilenie udziału mieszkańców Kamieńczyka w spławie przypada na koniec wieku X I X i początek obecnego stulecia. Podstawowy wpływ na upowszechnienie wśród nich zajęcia flisackiego wywarło niewątpliwie bliskie sąsiedztwo ze spławnymi rzekami, Bugiem i Narwią oraz dużymi obszarami puszczańskimi. Niemniej zasadniczą rolę w t y m zakresie odegrał rozwój kapitalistycznych form eksploatacji lasów oraz specyfika struktury gospodarczej i społecznej osady. Kamieńczyk nad Bugiem był od dawna osadą rolniczą o ubogiej, piaszczystej ziemi, dużym rozdrobnieniu gospodarczym i z ludnością bez­ rolną, co zmuszało jego mieszkańców do stałego szukania dodatkowych źródeł dochodu. Niezwykła przedsiębiorczość, jaka cechowała dawniej i do dziś jeszcze cechuje ludzi kamieńczykowskich, spowodowała, że Kamieńczyk na przestrzeni omawianego okresu stał się nie tylko osadą flisacką, ale wyrósł na znaną wśród flisaków całej Polski osadę retmańską. Zadaniem pracy o Kamieńczyku było ukazanie roli flisu jako zajęcia podstawowego i masowego wśród jego mieszkańców w kształtowaniu się stosunków gospodarczych i społecznych osady. Praca posiada charak­ ter problemowej monografii osady, w t y m jednakże sensie, że w ogólnym procesie rozwojowym osady zagadnienie flisu wysunięte zostało na miejsce czołowe i potraktowane najpełniej. Uzasadnieniem takiego ujęcia pracy jest pełna reprezentatywność osady pod względem szerok ego upowszechnienia zajęcia flisackiego w omawianym okresie. Praca składa się z 3 części: I Ogólna charakterystyka osady, I I Flis i flisacy, I I I Flis a gospodarcze i społeczne przeobrażenia osady. W y ­ jaśniam, iż z pracy zostały świadomie wyeliminowane zagadnienia do­ tyczące techniki spławu z tego względu, że wejdą one do innego opra­ cowania, które obejmie organizację i technikę spławu drzewa w całym dorzeczu Wisły. W części pierwszej pracy omówiono położenie, wygląd zewnętrzny oraz bogatą przeszłość historyczną osady związaną z dziejami dawnego Kamieńca Mazowieckiego. Poza t y m przedstawiono zarys stosunków gospodarczych i społecznych, kładąc główny nacisk na charakterystykę struktury gospodarczej i zawodowej celem naświetlenia specyficznych warunków osady zmuszających ludność do szukania zarobków przy flisie. Część druga pracy uwzględnia przede wszystkim zagadnienia związane bezpośrednio z zajęciami flisackimi, a więc tradycje i rozwój flisu, przedmiot i tereny spławów, możliwości awansu w zawodzie flisackim oraz życie na tratwach. Część trzecia jest rozwiązaniem podstawowego problemu pracy, naświetla ona bowiem i wykazuje rolę i znaczenie flisu w kształtowaniu się stosunków gospodarczych i społecznych osady. Rola ta została ukazana na przykładzie zmian zaistniałych w Kamieńczyku ,- �366 MARIA BIERNACKA pod wpływem flisu w strukturze gospodarczej i zawodowej, w poziomie gospodarki rolnej, w warunkach bytu mieszkańców, w stosunkach rcdzinno-sąsiedzkich oraz w kształtowaniu się świadomości społecznej kamieńczykowian.
