R. Reinfuss, i n an article "Contemporary Research on Folk A r t and Prospects for the Near F u t u r e " gives a brief review of the research done i n the i n t e r - w a r period. A t that t i m e , there was no i n s t i t ­ u t i o n engaged i n research on a large scale, the material base was insufficient, the decisive factor being the i n d i v i d u a l interests of the authors, and this accounts for the fact that certain areas of this country and certain fields of folk art were elabor­ ated extensively and i n great detail w h i l e others were overlooked. The ethnographers dealt, above all, w i t h the eastern regions, several monographs on ornamentation appeared and art historians focussed t h e i r interest on wood-cuts, paintings and sculpture. The post-war period brought the setting u p of the State Institute for Research on Folk A r t i n 1946, w h i c h was later taken over by the A r t Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Under the guidance of Professor Reinfuss, research was undertaken a l l over the country. I t is envisaged that this w o r k w i l l be completed about 1970. Museums and universities (Warsaw, Cracow, Poznari, Wroclaw, Lublin, Torun) have enlivened their scientific and publishing activity. A t present, the inventories being made i n various localities by the Folk A r t Laboratory of the A r t Institute alone have covered t w o thirds of the whole area of the country (see map p. 191) a n d comprise 63,000 items and 32,000 photographs. A l l this has created a material base w h i c h can be used for m a k i n g detailed elabo­ rations and later monographs and synthetic works. Closer ties have been established with other disciplines, such as history and archeology, the a i m being to reconstruct and give a picture of the deve­ lopment of folk art. Most of these works appear i n "Polish Folk A r t " . There is only one popular-synthetic item, namely: R. Reinfuss, J. Swiderski, Folk A r t i n Poland, Cracow 1960. I n comparison w i t h the pre-war period, relatively less interest is n o w being shown i n handicrafts and ornamentation techniques. On the other hand, a lot of attention is being p a i d to sculpture and the most comprehensive elaborations on a national scale have been prepared on wood-cuts (pre-war publications of Ł a z a r s k i , Skoczylas and, particularly, P i w o c k i — see p. 205 i t e m 2—5, 7—9), on paper-cuts, (p. 209 i t e m 1—19), pottery (p. 223 i t e m 1—58), regional costumes (p. 219 item 24—64 — p a r t i c u l a r l y the Atlas of Regional Costumes, w h i c h appears regul­ arly), on folk toys (work by T. Seweryn), on furniture making (particularly folk coffers, p . 229 i t e m 1, 2, 8—11) a n d on folk b u i l d i n g (p. 192—200). Studies of folk painting are concentrated on analysis of historical relics, their iconographie o r i g i n and of archive materials concerning handicraft guilds. Special attention is devoted to the w o r k of i n d i v ­ i d u a l artists, p a r t i c u l a r l y i n fields where an i m p o r t ­ ant role is played by the artist's o w n inventiveness, thus i n sculpture a n d paper-cuts. Most of the art­ icles on these disciplines are published i n "Polish Folk A r t " . As regards the various regions of the country, f u l l monographic w o r k s have already been w r i t t e n on the folk culture of the Wielkopolska (Poznań) region, Silesia ( i n p r i n t ) and the K u r p i e region. Works are being prepared on the K u j a w y region, Pomorze G d a ń s k i e and the Rzeszów region. A lot of material has been collected concerning the Podhale region and the voivodships of Łódź, Kielce and Lublin.
